This is abook about the life and afterlife of a strange photograph made in 1920 by Man Ray. Or was it Marcel Duchamp? Or perhaps Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp? The photograph is humble yet enigmatic. It is a document. It is an artwork. It is a document of an artwork. It is realist and abstract. It is a still life and a landscape. It may even be a performance. I would give you its title if I could be sure of it.

For most of its early life nobody claimed very much on behalf of this image. But it has become a talisman, a silent secret, a key to unlock a hidden order of photography, and the revolution in art and society that it foreshadowed. It may even symbolise the crumbling of our age and the foundation of something else.

a Handful of Dust charts the strange passage of this photograph across the last century, in and out publications and exhibitions. The book follows connections to an unliky array of images, from aerial reconnaissance and forensics, to conceptual art and abstraction.

a Handful of Dust accompanied Campany’s exhibition of the same name, curated for Le Bal, Paris (16 October 2015 – 17 January 2016), with works by Man Ray, John Divola, Sophie Ristelhueber, Mona Kuhn, Gerhard Richter, Xavier Ribas, Nick Waplington, Jeff Wall and many others, alongside anonymous press photos, postcards, magazine spreads and movies.
