East Los is made in close collaboration with renowned author and former Los Angeles Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez, whose generous gift of his poem
“The Eastside Of All Eastsides” became the foundation for my journey through
the East of Los Angeles. Inspired by his words, I took long and short walks, had in-depth and short talks.

“IN EAST LA THE SURFACE NEVER SETTLES” by STIG DE BLOCK
It is scraped, layered, reclaimed, and repainted before it’s painted again.
A single wall holds three generations of decisions. Each coat of color marks a new claim to space, a new attempt to define belonging. East LA is a place where expression and survival merge without permission. Time, in this body of work, is both subject and material. East LA appears not as a fixed geography but as a manuscript of accumulated surfaces. I trace these material histories through façades that recall a real life collage: pastel warehouse walls fading into half-tone cemented windows, wooden reinforcements aligning with neighboring roofs, and color fields that evoke the monumental abstraction of a Rothko, though in concrete and plaster.
