Immediately after Gainsbourg's death in 1991, Fulbert's nephew, Yannick Ribeaut, photographed his house extensively. Now, for the very first time, these unique photographs have been published in this book along with some hand-written drafts of Gainsbourg's lyrics as well as a lot of unpublished scribbled notes that the singer wrote to Fulbert. Through historical photographic archives, he appropriates these old images as such by transforming them through his particular draughtsmanship and creating captivating, monumental drawings as meta-realities of our recent afflicted past.

Eric Manigaud’s work process begins with an extensive research on carefully selected topics of our collective heritage of suffering, based on photographic archives dated from 1850s until 1920s, an era when photography was considered scientific and objective. The photo-realistic aspect in his drawings is necessary to obtain a renewal experience by the spectator. Enhanced by its composition of thousands tiny strokes, executed in graphite and graphite powder, which emphasizes the visual density of the image.
Before drawing, he always proceeds as follow: the selected photographic print is projected in a much larger size than it’s original. The enlarged image causes a deviation, which adds an elusive, spectral quality to the image. This large-size projection Manigaud starts to draw continuing for days, avoiding his own shadow while standing in the light of the projector. His almost obsessive drawing practice intertwines a mystical and narrative element to the work. As for the artist, drawings are a more intense version of the realistic properties of his archive and trying to reveal it’s invisibility.

Eric Manigaud lives and work in Saint-Etienne, France. The work of the artist is presented in museums such as: Musée d’Art Moderne (Fr), Museum of Art (Korea), Museum Dr. Guislain (Bel), Musée d’Histoire du XXième Siècle (Fr), The Royal Albert Memorial Museum (UK). His drawings are also included in many private-collections from all over the world.

The 51 edition of Katrien De Blauwer entitled ‘Femmes Coupées’ consists of 51 variations on the same theme: a collage of three cuts of found images featuring feminine subjects, bathing in De Blauwer’s well-known mysterious and sensual atmosphere.

*Note that number 13 and 19 are already mounted on (acid-free) cardboard.

ARTIST

Katrien De Blauwer

TITLE

femmes coupées

YEAR

2018

MEDIUM

Collage

SIZE

Image size: 8 x 11,5 cm / Paper size: 11 x 14,5 cm

SIGNATURE

Stamped, titled, dated, numbered and signed on verso

EDITION

51

Since 2004, Gallery FIFTY ONE has been producing Limited Edition Photographs or Works On Paper by emerging and established artists. Since its first publication in 2012, the photo book “Architecture of Density” has become an icon in the history of the medium. This series of photos has won many awards, becoming symbolic of the megacity of Hong Kong - the photographer’s adopted home from 2002 to 2019. The new edition also contains 9 additional unpublished images from the archive of this unique photo series. Marc Feustel, whom Michael Wolf called his “ghostwriter,” has contributed an essay for this edition. Focusing on Hong Kong’s specific visual elements, Michael Wolf has depicted life in the architectural and social densification of one of the world’s most crowded cities, and developed a distinctive photographic style for “Architecture of Density.” He removes any traces of skyline or horizon from the images, achieving a flattening of space until it becomes a relentless abstraction of urban development from which the viewer’s eye can no longer escape from. With these jarring visual effects, Michael Wolf conveys a feeling of the buildings expanding into infinity, reflecting the possible spatial experience of Hong Kong residents. These photographs have struck a nerve and have become part of our collective memory. Directed by Klein himself, from the selection of content to book design, this large-format publication looks back at his uncompromisingly creative lifetime, showcasing Klein’s prolific and relentlessly innovative contribution to the world of photography, art, design, and filmmaking.
Published in association with a major retrospective at the International Center of Photography, this book is a comprehensive take on his career. While best known as a photographer who broke all the rules and conventions, William Klein: Yes focuses on the full range of Klein’s work, from his abstract paintings through to his startling, authentic street photography and photobooks and his dynamic, satirical take on filmmaking. With a flowing, chronological text by David Campany, this book will be both an introduction to William Klein for a new generation and a source of fresh insights for those who already know who William Klein was: a true original.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0557/6173/1769/products/Schermafbeelding2023-01-07om17.15.42.png?v=1673108408
arpais-du-bois-lustrer-nos-epines
ARPAÏS DU BOIS: lustrer nos épines

On the occasion of Arpaïs Du Bois' new solo show at Gallery FIFTY ONE, LE MYTHE DE LA PENTE DOUCE, a new FIFTY ONE PUBLICATION has been published.

ARTIST

Arpaïs Du Bois

TITLE

lustrer nos épines

YEAR

2023

MEDIUM

Soft cover

SIZE

21 x 15 cm

PAGES

159

LANGUAGE

English

MISC

With text by Roger Szmulewicz

The works of Arpaïs Du Bois are not merely pencil lines or brushstrokes on paper combined with tatters of text. For me he is forever frozen in that moment, a larger than life person who lived an epic life. I have spent the past twenty years archiving and cataloging his art and the accumulated ephemera, which has helped to build a fuller picture of the life he lived. I have heard him described as a slight, baby faced, a great raconteur and a man who “never met a stranger but only friends he has not yet met”. In filmed interviews he comes across as calm, soft-spoken yet unflappable, confident in his chosen path. A man comfortable in his own skin, enjoying exploring the world and embracing all its diversity.

Upon this occasion, of the centennial of Jan’s birth, we have the opportunity of this book to dig deeper into our archives, revisiting these contact sheets and presenting images for their first time. Jan’s photography is a window into this time, post-war and just before the upheavals of the late 1960s. We get to see the world through Jan’s eyes, intimate moments with the people of New York City whom he loved.

(Kore Yoors, 2023)

Special edition including the FIFTY ONE Publication The Cactus Derivatives: Volume two and an original unique drawing, signed and numbered by the artist.

ARTIST

Dirk Zoete

TITLE

The Cactus Derivatives: Volume two

YEAR

2023

MEDIUM

Soft Cover

SIZE

21 x 15 cm (book)/ 20,5 x 14,5 cm (drawing)

PAGES

207

LANGUAGE

English

EDITION

Edition of 15

SIGNATURE

Signed and numbered by the artist

MISC

With texts by Roger Szmulewicz

In this 2nd volume on cactus derivatives and plant drawings, Dirk Zoete continues his imaginary botanical journey. His third-floor space is on the Veemkade with views of the river IJ. Light from the northwest streams through a square skylight and can be filtered by slightly cracking the window open or closing it somewhat. Van den Brink spent years on the road – often behind the wheel of his Chevy Van – as an inconspicuous voyeur, capturing the world around him with a Minox camera. Occasionally, he would mount his miniature camera onto binoculars or a telescope. Now, however, he felt it was time to put the Minox to work shooting still lifes for the first time. It started with a stone. He took a hefty rock, bigger than his fist, and set it on a stool the way a sculptor might position a fresh lump of clay on a pedestal. No flash, no extra lights: the photographs relied solely on daylight. For the background, he suspended a canvas tarp. And to focus, he needed a tape measure on hand. Split-second, casual shots from a comfortable angle? All the advantages of the Minox went out the window. The subject matter forced him to adopt a new strategy. All the obligatory, labor-intensive operations required for heavy and unwieldy tripod-mounted technical cameras that he’d thrown to the wind were now the new rule for his spy camera. He stuck with the Minox because he was intent on preserving the coarse grain of his printed photographs, which had a similar feel to the surface of frottages and autochromes. Because Minox film rolls were far too expensive, van den Brink cut his own film to size. While he is most recognized for his candid and lively black-and-white street photography, Winogrand’s portfolio also includes an impressive collection of over 45,000 color slides captured between the early 1950s and the late 1960s. Using two cameras strapped to his chest—one loaded with color film and the other with black-and-white film—he extensively documented his surroundings between commercial assignments, developing and refining a distinct and progressively daring body of personal work.
From the bustling streets of Manhattan to the shaded underside of Coney Island’s boardwalk to the expansive landscapes and open roads of the American West, Winogrand Color unveils a tender portrait of a version of the country that feels at once bygone and timeless. Presenting 150 photographs selected from the archives at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, this is the first monograph dedicated in full to Winogrand’s vivid color photography.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Garry Winogrand (1928–84) was a highly influential American photographer who came into prominence for his trailblazing contributions to street photography. His work continues to inspire and shape the field, leaving a lasting impact on both his contemporaries and future generations of photographers.

The posthumous release of the last book that Michael Wolf himself worked on, published to mark the fifth anniversary of his death.

ARTIST

Arpaïs Du Bois, Michael Wolf

TITLE

Hong Kong Whispers

YEAR

2024

PUBLISHER

Hannibal Books

MEDIUM

Hardcover

SIZE

25 x 19 cm

PAGES

160

LANGUAGE

English

Michael Wolf and Arpaïs Du Bois translate the vibrant global city of Hong Kong into a unique art book. The subject is Japanese photographer Araki, a man who talks about life through photographs. His powerful oeuvre, decades’ worth of images, has been pared down to about 1,000 photographs which tell the story of Araki and comprise the ultimate retrospective collection of his work.

Known best for his intimate, snapshot-style images of women often tied up with ropes (kinbaku, or Japanese rope-tying art) and of colorful, sensual flowers, Araki is an artist who reacts strongly to his emotions and uses photography to experience them more fully. Obsessed with women, Araki seeks to come closer to them through photography, using ropes like an embrace and the click of the shutter like a kiss. His work is at once shocking and mysteriously tender; a deeply personal artist, Araki is not afraid of his emotions nor of showing them to the world.

Nobuyoshi Araki was born in Tokyo in 1940. Given a camera by his father at the ripe age of twelve, Araki has been taking pictures ever since. He studied photography and film at Chiba University and went into commercial photography soon after graduating. In 1970 he created his famous Xeroxed Photo Albums, which he produced in limited editions and sent to friends, art critics, and people selected randomly from the telephone book. Over the years, his bold, unabashed photographs of his private life have been the object of a great deal of controversy and censorship (especially in his native Japan), a fact that has not fazed the artist nor diminished his influence. To date, Araki has published over 400 books of his work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0557/6173/1769/files/Screenshot2024-05-11at12.05.48_47ae2fab-f3ec-4e53-b56a-21791d51a51c.png?v=1715423692
romain-laprade-distances
ROMAIN LAPRADE: Distances

ARTIST

Romain Laprade

TITLE

Distances

YEAR

2023

PUBLISHER

Yvon Lambert

MEDIUM

Soft cover

SIZE

29 x 22 cm

PAGES

92

LANGUAGE

English

Romain Laprade is a 35-year-old French photographer. In her collages there is the hushed, troubled, and sensual atmosphere of 1950s cinema. As in film noir, it is not action that matters, but waiting. Not dialogue, but the glances that are avoided. I live under the notion, ‘If my portraits are not moving you emotionally in some way, a feeling of empathy, confusion, surprise, joy, fear, or just a gut wrenching feeling of awkwardness, then I haven’t done my work as a portrait artist.’ On Earth As It Is Not In Heaven is my tribute to humankind from birth to death. These portraits are of real people, celebrities, and athletes of every culture, race and gender – all of which are experiencing life as it has been dealt to them. In our journeys from birth to death we will all struggle and will all suffer, and the moments in between may be joy, excitement and even orgasmic. These images are caught at 125th of a second document and provide evidence of one’s journey through life; they are little secrets about a secret. You will find I reveal as much as I don’t reveal and, in the portrait, the more it tells the less you will know. Welcome to a book that I have sunk my heart, soul, blood and tears into. His images gives off a certain cinematographic quality. Whether they are deep in thought or gazing directly into the lens, the faces he observes make up a gallery of characters who seem to have stepped straight into neo-realist production, an Italian style of cinema that appeared just after the Second World War, favoring unique physicques and preferring people from the street to professional actors. Roels.

For Bruno V. Roels, photography is never an end, but a starting point. From a single image, he develops a multitude of variations, without seeking to settle on a definitive version. Each image remains open, unstable, always subject to being revisited. He offers us the idea of a paradise, or rather, a certain paradise. A space constructed, transformed, amplified: pencil, oil stick, double exposure, artificial intelligence. Gestures that disrupt perception and introduce doubt. And perhaps this paradise is not a place. But a projection. A promise we continue to believe in, even as we know it remains out of reach.

<table style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'San Francisco', 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif; Drawn to a particular period – the late 1920s and into the 1930s – she found herself moving through frozen images of people mid-transformation : bodies compressed into legibility by the camera, lives fixed onto paper. Working though a Woolfian lens, she made a series of work that borrows these figures to tell a story that is, as usual, personal. The title of the installation comes from a single line taken from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves (1931): “Now I will wrap my agony inside my pocket handkerchief. It shall be screwed tight into a ball.“ Six paper balls — one for each of Virginia Woolf’s six characters — are installed in the space. Around them, on the walls, the twenty-nine photomontages unfold, tracing the same arcas the novel itself, a single day, from sunrise to sunset.

This installation (on view from September 17 to November 7, 2026) was created as part of the Correspondances program, in which artists are invited to explore the collection of Karl Lagerfeld’s library at 7L and reinterpret it through their own perspective. Detached from their immediate architectural context, the halls become autonomous, almost abstract spaces, where sensory experience takes precedence over documentary reading. Shapes, patterns and light seem to respond to one another from page to page, composing an ensemble guided by an intuitive and sensitive approach.

Far from a historical or typological study, "Hallways" offers an immersion into an architecture of detail and sensation, shaped by the spatial and visual experimentations of the post-war period. Accompanied by a text by Jean-Claude Girard, the book offers a sensitive perspective on these transitional spaces, conceived as places of everyday experience suspended between public space and domestic intimacy.

Text from the editor

ARTIST

Armen Eloyan

TITLE

Armen Eloyan

YEAR

2019

PUBLISHER

Hannibal

MEDIUM

Soft cover

SIZE

24 x 17 cm

PAGES

208

ISBN

978 94 9267 789 1

The dystopic world of artist Armen Eloyan

“The paintings of Armen Eloyan convey an air of immediate familiarity. We recognize familiar figures: old acquaintances like Pinocchio, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Sponge Bob, Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, Krazy Kat, Pluto, and Goofy—an anthropomorphic community of mainly American animated cartoon and comic-strip characters. According to Eloyan, a good painting is like a good joke: the pieces must fit together.

Noted for his large-scale, irreverent paintings of anthropomorphic animals and figures, he depicts absurd narratives in his darkly comic work. Though Eloyan doesn’t define himself as a writer, his paintings tell sardonic, sometimes erotic stories. Inspired partly by cartoons and street art, as well as the European masters, his works are heavily impastoed with colorful paints and thick black outlines, adroitly balancing dark humor with a searing existential vision of a dystopic world.

With texts by art critic Anne Bonnin and Laurence Gateau (director, Frac des Pays de la Loire).

In collaboration with the Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp.
