Yasumasa Morimura, master of appropriation, offers his elegant 1984 series of still-lifes Barco Negro on a Table as a collection of five elegant collotype prints. The title of the series comes from the Portuguese folk song Barco Negro performed by Amalia Rodrigues, a favorite of Morimura. His interpretation includes still lives taken on a table in his studio, where everyday objects such as tableware and clothing are elevated to a higher realm of visual sophistication.
The collotype’s continuous tone lends itself perfectly to Morimura’s images, luminous whites and deep blacks contributing to the exquisite quality of these modernist works. The five 8”x10” prints are housed in a high quality paper portfolio and produced by the master printers at the Benrido Atelier.
