The American Saul Leiter, an incorrigible flâneur—one of the pioneers of color photography and a master of framing—played with the pictorial through multiplicity and reflections in New York during the second half of the 20th century.

As of the 1950s, this pioneer of color photo depicted New York with an innovative and aesthetic brilliance. He composed with panchromatic film, and also sometimes black and white, creating images that flirted with abstraction. By layering frames within the frame, he played with reflections and movements, and put façades and vitrines in perspective. In Manhattan, the anonymous passers-by he encountered became, through his images, actors on the New York stage. In 1989, the iconic magazine Six, published by Rei Kawakubo, the designer at the helm of Comme des Garçons, gave Saul Leiter creative carte blanche. Despite having ceased his photography practice, he paced New York again just as he had decades before…
